Our high school presentations aim to raise awareness and understanding of development issues. In 2006, over 2000 local high school students participated in our outreach programs and learned about water scarcity, energy poverty and global food security. These interactive presentations challenge students to critically consider global issues and can be specifically tailored to your classroom or event. For more information or to request a presentation, please request a presentation through our online form or contact us at uwaterloo@ewb.ca.
Three separate presentation are available:
Through an interactive workshop that includes building a water filter and brainstorming viable water usage solutions, students learn about water scarcity in Canada, and how seemingly simple challenges, such as gaining access to safe water, are magnified in places like Cameroon. Learn more...
The world produces more than enough food to feed the entire global population, and yet 850 million people go hungry each day. The food choices we make here in Canada affect not only our own health and resources, but also impact communities in Africa. Through engaging students in an interactive rice-husking activity, students learn where and how rice is grown, how it is processed, and the implications of consumption and trade for the global market. The Energy Matters presentation assembles students in to teams to simulate families in rural communities completing daily household tasks. Through this hands-on approach, students will investigate energy poverty, and learn about the different types of energy used around the world and the effects of lack access to energy on livelihoods.
